If you have a family member living in the Netherlands, find out if you’re eligible to join ​them with a family or partner visa.

You can move to the Netherlands to join certain relatives already living there. However, ​which family members you can join and the process for doing so depends largely on ​their nationality. You may need to obtain a family visa or permit to stay in the country as ​a relative or partner.

Family visas in the Netherlands

Many people move to the Netherlands each year to join partners and family members. In ​2020, Dutch authorities issued 32,460 residence permits for family reunion purposes. ​This was second only to Brexit-related residence permits.

Similar to other European Union (EU) and European Free Trade Association (EFTA – ​Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland) countries, the Netherlands operates a ​two-tier immigration system. Those from other EU/EFTA member states can travel ​freely to the Netherlands and face fewer restrictions when it comes to family members ​joining them. Those from outside the EU/EFTA will normally need a visa or residence ​permit.

The Immigration and Naturalization Service (Immigratie- en Naturalisatiedienst – IND) is ​the Dutch government department responsible for all visas and residence permits, ​including family and partner visas in the Netherlands.

Who can move to the Netherlands to join family?

Who does not need a family visa to move to the Netherlands?

All EU/EFTA citizens can move to the Netherlands without a visa or residence permit. If ​you come from any EU/EFTA member state, all you need to do is register with your ​local authority. You will then be entered into the Personal Records Database ​(Basisregistratie Personen – BRP) and will get a citizen service number ​(burgerservicenummer – BSN).

Relatives of EU/EFTA nationals living in the Netherlands also don’t need a family visa to ​join them. This is the case regardless of whether the family member is from the ​EU/EFTA or a third country. They will simply need to register with the local authorities ​and apply for verification against EU law with the IND. This applies to the following ​relatives:

Spouse/partner

Children/grandchildren under 21

Dependent children/grandchildren over 21

Any other financially dependent relatives

The exception to this is if your relative is a Dutch national. In this case, you will usually ​need either a combined entry visa/permit (machtiging tot voorlopig verblijf – MVV) or a ​residence permit.

Who needs a family visa to join family in the Netherlands?

If you are a third-country national and you have relatives from outside the EU/EFTA living ​in the Netherlands on either a permanent or temporary residence permit, you can apply ​for a family visa or permit to join them if you are:

The spouse/partner

A child under 18

Some non-EU/EFTA nationals, for example, those from Australia, Japan, and the US, can ​enter the Netherlands without needing to obtain a visa beforehand. However, they will ​need to apply for a Dutch residence permit for family purposes shortly after arriving in ​the Netherlands. All other third-country nationals need to apply for a combined entry ​visa and provisional residence permit (MVV) before traveling to the Netherlands.

Family visas for UK nationals since Brexit Since leaving the EU on 1 January 2021, the UK ​has been subject to immigration controls in all EU/EFTA countries. British citizens can ​travel and stay in the Netherlands for up to 90 days without a visa or permit. However, ​they will need a Dutch residence permit for family purposes if they stay for longer than ​three months. This is available to spouses/partners and children under 18.

Dear lazy people,

How many of you sit around talking about the things you want to do, or you're going to ​do, just to never do them? I'm talking about the people who are fully aware that they're ​burdened by laziness but they just wallow in their own self-pity for not being as ​successful as they want to be.

If that's you, I have something to say that could change your life: Don't ever trust your ​future self. Because if you won't do it today, you won't do it tomorrow.

How often do you look at a problem and say, "I'll just do it tomorrow"? From things as ​simple as doing the dishes, to going to the gym. How many times have you convinced ​yourself that your future self will have more motivation than you do today, only to get to ​tomorrow and utter the same words: "I'll start tomorrow"?

But the sooner you actually realize that your future self is even lazier than you are ​today, the sooner you can get stuff done. Getting things done and being productive are ​the product of motivation. And if you can acknowledge that you won't suddenly, ​magically, have more motivation tomorrow than you do today (which, let's be honest, we ​know you won't), you'll start to do one of two things:

1. You'll realize that the responsibility is left on your today self, and get it done.
   
2. Or you'll accept that you're not gonna do that thing, and that's okay too. Because ​realizing you're not gonna do something liberates you from the stress of not doing it, ​and you can move on and focus on other things.
   

Another way to look at it: Instead of saying "I don't have time", say "It's not a priority". ​Literally say this out loud, and it will start to affect the way you behave. "My health isn't a ​priority, so I'm not gonna go to the gym." "Finishing the music album I've always wanted ​to write isn't a priority, so I'm not gonna do it." "My friend's event isn't a priority, so I'm not ​going." If those things sit okay with you, then maybe it's time to start thinking about what ​things are priorities for you.

Know you want to hang out with your friends more, but you keep bailing, saying you'll do ​it next time? You won't. You're being lazy, and only you can change this behavior. If you ​acknowledge that it's not going to change next time, you're gonna have to overcome ​the exact same laziness all over again.

Seriously, you have to start getting used to overcoming your laziness. Productive ​people aren't any less lazy; they just realize they have to overcome their laziness in ​order to achieve the things they want to achieve. Time is a choice, and yes, it can go ​way too far in the other direction as well. People brag about getting no sleep—that's a ​rant for another video.

But being motivated and keeping busy, it takes practice. It's like a skill that you have to ​do over and over to get better at it. Think about when you're a kid; your attention span is ​literally seconds. And as you age, and as you spend time developing skills, sitting in ​classes, engaging in conversations, your attention span increases. The same thing can ​be said about motivation: Practice makes you better at it.

So if not being lazy would make you happier, just remember these simple rules: Never ​trust your future self, and if you won't do it today, you won't do it tomorrow.

問題に直面しながら「明日やろう」と言うことが、どれほど頻繁にあるか。簡単な皿洗いから​ジム通いまで、未来の自分に今日よりもっとやる気があるだろうと自分に言い聞かせることが​何度あったか。ただ、明日になっても同じ言葉を繰り返すだけ。「明日から始める」と。

しかし、未来の自分が今日の自分よりも怠け者であることに気づくとすぐに、物事を成し遂げ​ることができる。物事を成し遂げる力と生産性はやる気の産物です。もしあなたが今後突然、​魔法のように今日以上のやる気が出ることはないと正直に認めることができれば、あなたはこ​れから言う二つのうち、一つのことをするでしょう。

1. それをやり遂げる責任が今日の自分にあることを悟ること。
   
2. どうせやらない自分を受け入れること。実際のところそれは、悪いことではありません。何​かをやらないと決めることで、それをやらないストレスから解放され、他のことに集中でき​るのです。
   

別の見方をすると、「時間がない」と言う代わりに、「優先度が低い」と、文字通り大声で言​うことが、あなたの行動に影響を与えます。「健康は優先度が低いから、ジムには行かない」​「ずっと書きたかった音楽アルバムを完成させるのは優先度が低いことだから、やらない」​「友達のイベントは優先度が低いから、行かない」。このような考え方に問題を感じないので​あれば、もしかすると何があなたの優先事項であるかについて改めて考え始めるべきかもしれ​ません。

本当は友達ともっと遊びたいけど、いつも次回にしようと言って断っている。そして、それが​起こることはない。あなたは怠けているだけです。そして、これを変えられるのはあなただ​け。次回も自分は変わらないと認めるとき、あなたはそれと全く同じ怠け心を克服しなければ​ならないのです。
